Clinic Maxena was started in 1966 in Santo Tomas to provide medical, dental, optical assistance and some kinds of surgery for the people in the highlands of the Boca Costa region of Guatemala. Clinic Maxena treats about 15,000 cases a year, and most patients cannot afford the cost of their care. Their medical needs would go unmet if not for the Diocese of Helena and individual donors. The doctor is aided in his patient diagnosis by the Clinic's laboratory, and these tests are performed by a trained technician. The Clinic's pharmacy sells a number of medicines and the costs are kept as low as possible for the benefit of the needy population. Also, the Clinic is involved in growing native medicinal plants for treatment as well as educating communities in preventative health care.
